Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaini... by Daniel G. Md Amen Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: A thought-provoking an informative book, it provides new insight into the mind-brain system and has made me rethink my own thought processes. Sounds redundant, but it's true! Love the book.
Say Good Night to Insomnia: The Six-Week, Drug-Free Program Developed At Harv... by Gregg D. Jacobs Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: Putting all the ideas in this book together helped me discover some things I never knew were contributing to my insomnia. I feel like I'm finally on the path to better sleep!! (after having insomnia most of my life!)
The HeartMath Solution: The Institute of HeartMath's Revolutionary Program fo... by Doc Lew Childre, Howard Martin Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: This is an excellent book and it spells out the scientific proof of the power of the heart to help us find solutions to the complexity of our emotional lives and situations.
I have practised meditation for many years and the tradition I have worked with pints to the power of the compassionate heart to resolve issues and attain insights. This book gives clear evidence along with practical, straight to the point techniques that shows that you don't have to meditate for years to get back to a life of coherence and flow. So many insights and realisations from this book. Many thanks.
As an MS patient who, like most, must use money wisely, this book was the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a total rip-off! It is regurgitated information about MS that even the most minimally educated patient knows. Then, the exercises are not designed for MS patients with their balance, numbness and pain problems but are generic exercises that can be found anywhere in a book, on the Internet or on a simple video DVD.
Save your money!
The Brain Trust Program: A Scientifically Based Three-Part Plan to Improve Me... by Larry McCleary Amazon Price: Customer Review: I couldn't help but notice that Dr. McCleary's photo on the back flap of the book shows that he is a bit overweight. This is natural considering his apparent love for beacon and eggs for breakfast, and his love for red meats, butter, and cheese. In my opinion, this is the only questionable part of his book. I just cannot believe that a diet abundant in saturated fats and cholesterols is not harmful to the cardiovascular system. And what is harmful for the cardiovascular system is also harmful for the brain. Furthermore, any amount of overweight puts a strain on all internal organs - for both man and beast.
Most readers may think I am some kind of fanatic. Well, maybe I am. But I believe that a calorie restricted, nutrient rich diet, leads to better health for the brain and all the other organs of the body. I also believe that calorie restriction is easy when the food served is simple and not made artificially enticing.
Maybe Dr McCleary believes that most people simply will not be willing to eliminate these expensive and enticing kinds of foods. I do admit that almost everyone probably feels this way, and would greatly benefit just by doing exactly as he has written. For this reason I must bow to his judgment.
I definitely agree with Dr. McCleary's recommendations for dietary supplements and mental exercises. What I'm really saying is that I plan to do as he says except that my diet is a bit more restrictive - simply steamed vegetables, whole grains, skim milk, more fish, less whole eggs, a little skinless chicken, and almost no red meat. And no candy. Candy kills more people than cigarettes.
I'm a 70 year old 5'10" male weighing in at 150lbs. My goals are to reduce my weight to what it was at age 25(140lbs.), and to improve my cognitive functions as much as possible. This book is sure to help. I highly recommend it to others.
The Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Workbook: Your Program for Regaining Cognitiv... by Douglas J. Mason Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: i was in a car accident and suffered a mild traumatic brain injury. i found this book extremely helpful and informative. the key thing to remember is that a brain injury is very different for each person. so some parts of the book probably wont apply to your situation. but i think this book does a good job of covering the overall symptoms of brain injuries. the book also gives you exercises to do throughout it which breaks up the reading and makes it more interesting.
What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Migraines: The Breakthrough Prog... by Alexander Mauskop, Barry Fox Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: This book is somewhat helpful. I read it after reading "Heal your Headache!",
which sort of set the standard.
This book does contain some helpful tips but my impressions and observations
are that it is dancing around the fringes of the migraine root causes, whereas
"Heal your headache!" gets much closer to the real problem.
You can't go wrong by reading this book, but it is not the final answer either.
What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Parkinson's Disease: A Holistic Progr... by Jill Marjama-Lyons, Mary J. Shomon Amazon Price: $10.87
Customer Review: Despite my stack of books on parkinson's,I find myself almost always refering to this book for most of my questions. And answers are usually there in a nondepressing style. What's more the book goes into alternative methods of treatment as well as the conventional, Many things your doctor won't take the time to tell you.
Brain Longevity: The Breakthrough Medical Program that Improves Your Mind and... by Dharma Singh Khalsa, Cameron Stauth Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Easy to read and full of useful information. Dr Dharma's enthusiasm is encouraging to anyone seeking further knowledge in this complex area. His holistic approach rings true to me and I very much appreciate his emphasis on working together with one's usual medical doctor as well as other complementary health professionals. His suggested dosages of nutritional supplements are much higher than what I have found in other literature - this being more 'food for thought'.
