Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain by Pete Egoscue Amazon Price: $11.56
Customer Review: I was impressed by the claims of "instant pain relief" by many of the commenters of this book, so I was looking forward to receiving this book as soon as possible. I recently bruised a nerve that caused my thumb to become tingly and I get upper back pain after typing for hours at a time at work, but rest assured, none of the claims came true. Apparently this is a case of the placebo effect and nothing more, i.e. - it will only possibly work if you have blind faith that it will work. For example, none of the exercises ever offered any "instant relief" and I could not feel any beneficial effect like the "loosening of knots" from any of the exercises. I had high hopes for this book because of the theory put forth by the author that many of our modern repetitive motion ills are actually caused by restricting our movements without any compensation for the unused musculature, leading to atrophy (and pain) of the unused musculature. This theory is in harmony with legitimate research of the benefits of movement like that of the neurophysiology of dancing (and how it can be used to treat Parkinson's disease. See SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? Sci American, June 16, 2008), and it explains how Tai Chi or Qigong can work as so many people have claimed it has (although the claims of enhanced psychic powers is still pure utter nonsense). There is one Hindu Sadhu in RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT who sat with one hand held up in the air for years. He did this for so long that eventually his whole arm and shoulder became permanently fused and even birds would nest in his outstretched hand. When asked what was the most difficult part of his practice, he said enduring the first three months of extreme pain, but after his arm started to fuse in place, the pain went away. While our civilization hasn't gone to that extreme, it does vividly illustrate the validity of the theory. It is only too bad that this book did not deliver on its promises but I guess it is the thought that counts.
Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy—Until You're 80 and Beyond by Chris Crowley, M.D., Henry S. Lodge Amazon Price: $10.36
Customer Review: I enjoyed this book very much. I've always been an exercise enthusiast, and my traditional thoughts were that if I were exercising 3 to 4 times a week, I was doing great! Now, I'm committed to exercising at least 6 days a week! I will run, ride, swim, or do resistance training at least 6 days a week from now on! The book really rationalized the purpose for exercise for me and it will for you too!

Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 T... by Daniel G. Amen Amazon Price: $10.85
Customer Review: Amen's book on ADD coupled to SPEC scans makes for some interesting reading. I'm not really sure that a simple SPEC scan and some drugs can solve all the problems he claims he can solve. The brain is not as easily described by simple colors from a $3000+ scan.
Of course, a Kindle has no color! Given that 20% of the book consists of COLOR SPEC scans where the various colors are important I have no idea what the publisher was thinking when they published this book for the Kindle. Buy the book on the Kindle if you must but you'll be sorry. The Kindle version of this book is a waste of money in my opinion.
Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaini... by Daniel G. Md Amen Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: A thought-provoking an informative book, it provides new insight into the mind-brain system and has made me rethink my own thought processes. Sounds redundant, but it's true! Love the book.
Seven years ago a doctor told my husband he had prostrate cancer and should have his prostrate removed. My husband went to a second doctor for a second opinion. The second doctor wanted to use radioactive pellets to stop the cancer. My husband decided to follow the diet Doctor Ornish had a group of prostrate cancer patients using. After following the diet and a "watchful waiting" process for seven years, my husband's health is even better than when he started the program. I think "The Spectrum" can help almost anyone who reads and follows it. Both my husband and I follow it.
I only gave the book 4 stars for two reasons:
-1. The structure of the book is not user friendly. I believe that for the first chapter of the book, Ornish should provide a "Reader's Digest" version of the book. Then for the readers who want more detail he could reference later chapters.
-2. I felt that Ornish presented his diet as THE solution. I wonder if there are places and people in the world for whom low fat diets are not possible or perhaps not even healthy, such as in Eskimo villages before Europeans took over. Would such people have developed the genes to not only live on a high fat diet, but the need to have a high fat diet? I wonder if there has been much research on the differences between the nutrition needs of different ethnic and racial groups?
The Career Fitness Program: Exercising your Options (8th Edition) by Diane Sukiennik, William Bendat, Lisa Raufman Amazon Price: $35.10
Customer Review: I just took a summer career class with this book and I highly recommend it. It validated the good things that I have done to be successfully, introduced me to new things and it reminded me of what I already new. Great book if you are lost and a highly recommended class if you don't know what you want to do in your career, changing careers or have come to a point in your life that it is necessary to change careers.
The Infertility Cure: The Ancient Chinese Wellness Program for Getting ... by Randine Lewis Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: After 6 years, this book made the difference. I just have to share this with anyone and everyone who is trying to conceive and having difficulty. I think it's important you know my fertility background.
I am now 35 years old, about 178lbs now, my husband is 36 and we have been TTC for 6 years and 2 months. About 16 months in, I decided to quit a very stressful job (which I believed was a major factor in my inability to conceive) and we conceived but I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks. I was beyond devastated. To try for so long only to lose our first hope was crushing. I went back to work at a less stressful job about 8 months later.
We did all of the standard testing, some multiple times, over the years. I had an HSG to see if my tubes were blocked. My husband's sperm was tested. I went to an endocrinologist who said I was borderline PCOS (with no cysts). So I tried Metformin. We tried several natural methods like the Creighton Model System with which you chart your cervical mucus to track your most fertile times, etc. I also went to a naturalist who helped me with anxiety with Adrenal Stress End (a miracle supplement!), but the Progesterone cream and Chasteberry herbs he suggested did not help me conceive. I even moved my bedroom around and of course we tried every position and I even tried standing on my head! Hey, when you're desperate, you'll do anything! We were diagnosed with Unexplained Infertility. The only diagnostic thing I did not do was a laparoscopy.
Well, that was about the worst thing to me. If nothing was wrong, and so there's nothing to fix, what do you do next? I really didn't want to try Clomid or ART. I wanted to become pregnant naturally if possible. I was afraid of the side effects of Clomid and the expense and toll ART would take on my mind and my body. But finally in Oct. '06 I felt like we had no choice but to start trying something else, so I took Letrozole (like Clomid) for 3 months. I had the worst possible experience with it. I had every side effect including panic attacks and no baby. By Dec. I decided that was enough. My job had become more stressful and after so long without conceiving I had a discussion with my husband about putting trying for a family first. I quit my job again and worked hard on eating better and losing some weight. Also reading and meditating and really trying to relax (that evil word!) and get healthy.
We made a plan that...
Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works by Evelyn Tribole, Elyse Resch Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: This was well worth my money! After reading the first chapter I began to make changes. It all makes sense. The best part, after years of dieting and regaining the weight, I am losing weight without any effort. I no longer see food as the enemy. I'm grateful to have been introduced to this book and love the effect it had on me. I will certainly recommend it to others.
