Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength by Bill Phillips, Michael D'Orso Amazon Price: $17.79
Customer Review: The best things about this book are that it is written in a highly motivating way, and it gives a good, basic, introductory overview of standard, conventional, strength-training exercises. And that can certainly be of great value to people who are absolute beginners in weight-lifting and know nothing about the subject.
What this workout plan will not enable you to achieve is "maximum results in minimum time". And since your body, your health and your time are probably your three greatest assets in life, isn't that what most people want in an ideal workout plan? And the reason that this program does not deliver in this regard is simply because the book never defines "intensity" adequately to begin with. Having the "right" definition for intensity (i.e. one that works both in theory and can be readily applied) is vital for obtaining "maximum results in minimum time" for two reasons:
1) The secret to building muscle lies in subjecting your muscles to a higher level of intensity than what they are currently accustomed to; then your muscles grow bigger and stronger to adapt to that higher level of intensity.
2) Intensity is inversely proportional to duration. The higher the intensity of an exercise, the shorter the exercise has to be in terms of time duration, simply becuse you'll tire faster.
Thus it turns out that the "most effective" way to build muscle is actually the "least time-consuming" way, IF you know the secrets to maximizing the intensity of any given exercises that you do. And for that, you need that right definition for intensity (which this book doesn't have), because without that definition for intensity, you won't know which strategies work best to achieve maximum intensity for any exercise that you do. But then no conventional, workout plan has ever defined intensity adequately, which explains why they all fail to deliver when it comes to enabling one to obtain maximum results in minimum time. Thus, it's no surprise that Sylvester Stallone (in his book "Sly Moves")disappointedy states that it took him at least six years before he finally got his "after body", when using a plan like the one in Body For Life.
The best published book that I currently know of for obtaining maximum intensity (and thus "maximum results in minimum time") is John Little's book "Max Contraction Training".
In sum, I gave this book 4 stars, simply because I think it gives a good, basic, introductory, overview of conventional weight-lift...
Stretching Anatomy by Arnold G. Nelson, Jouko Kokkonen Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: A good buy! Very good information for the muscle groups and how they work in the stretch. I like that it was broken down into muscle groups and showed all the different ways to stretch.
Hatha Yoga Illustrated by Martin Kirk, Brooke Boon, Daniel DiTuro Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Great book to help anyone remember what they are/were doing after a yoga session .
The Core Performance: The Revolutionary Workout Program to Transform Your Bod... by Mark Verstegen, Pete Williams Amazon Price: $11.61
Customer Review: This program has helped me lose the "last 10 pounds." My muscle tone has improved by leaps and bounds as has my balance and flexibility. As an added incentive, I lost 10 pounds! I recommend this program because it is well blanced, fun, and challenging. As an "over 50" R.N., I can see the benefits even for disabled patients I work with. The only weakness is compiling all the exercises into a book for use in the gym. I tore apart a book and copied each page, enlarging at the same time, and then arranged in a notebook according to the daily plan. A benefit is the web site where you can actually see the exercises demonstrated as well as the CD that is available (info in the back of the book)
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff by Jim Johnson Amazon Price: $21.56
Customer Review: So easy to understand! I know have a good knowledge of how the shoulder works. The exercises are very helpful. Got me closer of achieving zero pain. Hardly have pain anymore, mostly tight or a little uncomfortable but that's better than chronic pain ay!! It only takes around 3-4 hours to read. DO IT IF YOU KAIN'T TAKES NO MORES!!
The Great Balance and Stability Handbook by Andre Noel Potvin, Chad Benson Amazon Price: $8.95
Customer Review: This packs a big wallop in a small paperback volume. These exercises are concise, separated into nice sections that make sense. And, there a lots of them to choose from. When you open the book, at first you may think, "this is it?". Look again, and look inside. I was happily surprised and pleased at the amount of information and exercises presented for balance training with 3 different equipment options.
The Bowflex Body Plan by Ellington Darden Amazon Price: $19.77
Customer Review: I love this book.
I know that some people have stated that this book is just like the manual that comes with the Bowflex. That is only true if you just skim this book.
This book gives better pictures of the 23 exercises that he recommends. The exercises are for the Bowflex Ultimate. However, you can use these on the Power Pro with the right attachments.
He provides multiple routines plus an awesome chapter on breakdowns, double pre-exhaustion, and negatives. When you really look at this chapter you realize that there are more than 23 exercises because of the way you perform these routines.
The only negative about this book is the extra fluff. I believe it is there in order to convert you to the HIT philosophy. Since HIT goes against the grain of what most people have been told about weight lifting I get the feeling DR. Darden feels that he needs to convince you with all the extra pages that it works.
Once you are sold on HIT those extra pages just get in the way of the meat of this book.
If you follow the leanness program in the Bowflex manual to the letter and you have no intentions to work on sculpting your body then this book is probably not for you.
However, if you want to sculpt your body, work on strength training, and target your problem areas (arms, chest, abs) then this book is a must.
Nsca's Essentials of Personal Training by National Strength & Conditioning Association (U. S.) Amazon Price: $56.60
