army fitness physical training Books Get Tough!: The U.S. Special Forces Physical Conditioning Program by Tom Fitzgerald Amazon Price: Customer Review: I looked for this book for many years. I originally ordered GET TOUGH :The U S Special Forces Physical Conditioning Program from a book club. I never received my order because it went out of print. GET TOUGH is a 1985 publication written by Tom Fitzgerald. The program is 3 parts: stretching, total body strength building using your own body weight, and running. The format is actually based on the U S Navy SEALS workout and is not necessarily U S Army Special Forces based. Regardless, this program is a 12 week (5 days a week) workout that requires nothing more of the use of a pull-up/chin-up bar. It is a very challenging workout that involves working muscle groups on a daily basis. A guide chart is included, as well as targeted performance levels from beginning to end. The dietary guide in the introduction is dated and better information is now available. This book is an older version of the newer U S Navy SEALS workout books by Mark De Lisle, but not as intense as the latter. Overall a very solid workout program and well worth the wait. 163 pp hardback
I have read literally thousands of books, from self-help to spirituality to workout books to martial arts and beyond. (I have a master's degree in writing and an MBA as well as a voracious appetite for reading). There are very few books that I actually purchase, as I am a big believer in the public library system, and most books are forgettable.
This book I IMMEDIATELY went on Amazon and purchased, as well as the Lieutenant Colonel's other book, Operation Excellence. I have underlined, re-read, taken notes, and cracked the spines on both books. Bender has been through the war (literally) and makes connections between sports, the military, spirituality, and everything in between -- but what I treasure the most is that he is not purely theoretical; he breaks it down in both books into actual tactics -- the HOW you do it. And he is HONEST, bare-bones, realistic.
Terrific for a person who pushes themselves, or is looking to push themselves to another level personally and professionally. Important note: he is very much about ethics and responsibility to other people, to society, to the team. This is not a self-centered, self-obsessed approach -- it is about making self better for the good of the whole. (Side note: I used to be a pacifist, and he is my hero -- he has really opened my mind to my own ignorance of the military. I am now volunteering at the local VA hospital). If you like this book, Operation Excellence is a must.

Customer Review: As the other reviewer said, yes, this guide's information is fairly old. The information dates back to the late 80's, but for the most part it is all still applicable today. And I disagree about it being too basic. I'll admit that I'm no physical fitness instructor, but at the same time, physical fitness is not something new to me. I own a few other books on the subject and I have been exercising regularly for a while now. As the back cover states, this book contains some good info on:
Cardio, Strength and Flexibility Exercises, Calisthenics, Grass Drills, Guerrilla Exercises, Obstacle Courses, Rifle Drills, Log Drills, Nutrition Guidelines, Orienteering, Injury Recovery, Sports & Games, The Army Physical Fitness Test.
I found a lot of this info to be useful and I could imagine that others would too. This may not be the best book on the subject, but it is an official-issue guide and if it worked for the United States Army then it ought to work for you too.

Customer Review: With the Army moving towards less hardcopy and more internet based field manuals, FM 21-20 is getting harder to find. This is one manual that I need a hardcopy of (without depleting my printer of ink). It came fast, convenient, and in great shape!
