Customer Review: The author is a naturopath who claims he can heal people through diets designed to fit 4 blood types (A, B, 0, AB). If this were the thesis of this book, I would simply accept the author's word for it. Many non-conventional doctors use different media and methods to convey their healing abilities and, while the real nature of their systems baffles scientific analysis, fact is that they can heal. Unfortunately the author reached great success by stitching a delirious "scientific" theory around his thesis. I'll be expressing only few major critiques.
1) The evidence he presents to support his thesis is 100% circumstantial. About a third of the book sounds like this : "John, who was suffering for this and that, came to my office. After putting him on the right diet, his symptoms reverted or regressed". Circumstantial evidence can be used as a starting point but it cannot be used to prove a theory, nonetheless the author sells his theories as if they were the Gospel
2) D'Adamo states that group 0 is the blood group of hunters-gatherers. The group A are the farmers and the group B are the nomads. Well, this is not true. Go in the data bank and look for yourself. As an example, you'll notice that very many hunters-gatherers (Inuit and Ainu among others) have a lower group 0 incidence than peoples who have been farmers for millennia. The only major hunter-gatherer population fitting his scenario is the American Indian (both North and South). Amerindians were bottlenecked during their migration from Kamchatka to Alaska. Obviously, concepts like "genetic drift" are alien to the author.
3) Nowhere in the scientific literature could one find any of his "studies" he claimed were being wrapped up at the time of publication
4) The auhtor's knowledge of the biochemistry of lectins, albeit seemingly sound to most people, is primitive and incomplete. He is not just trying to keep it simple: he dismisses or ignores everything that may hinder his "truth".
5) For D'Adamo's theory to be valid, food lectins must remain functionally intact through the stomach, the intestine and, in many cases, the cooking process. Moreover they should remain invisible to the immune system. This is frankly hard to believe. The author states that lectins do in fact survive digestion (no prove or literature is presented on this) and completely ignores the host immune reaction.

In the accumulation of wisdom the most useful tool is an overarching explanation of a serious matter whether it is Warren Buffet explaining the core principles of successful investing or Albert Einstein giving us the key to understanding the universe.
Mr. Taubes has drawn together the many threads of knowledge of human degenerative disease into a coherent explanation of how modern diet impacts us. I have, so far, bought three copies for relatives and friends.
By necessity, in order to influence the bastions of conventional wisdom, it is academic in tone and dry in its delivery. But those that read it with an open mind will gain immeasurably from the experience.
And the four star rating? A bit more editing could have made the information more easily digestible.

Customer Review: Let me start off by stating that I agree with the essential concept of this book. I think we should all try to slow down, buy locally grown, fresh, seasonal food and cook a few meals from scratch. However, while reading the book something kept striking me as odd. The wording seemed charged, like a propaganda piece meant to demonize modern agriculture and our fast paced society, though Mr. Petrini repeatedly admits that a return to subsistence agriculture could not possibly support the current world population. I thought that maybe it was just the translation then on page 187 I came across the statement, "We do not need the accumulation of wealth, but its redistribution..." Then I realized, it is meant to be bit of a propaganda piece which explains the rhetoric. And, I have to wonder about the first example in the book, the traditional peppers of Asti that are no longer grown in Asti. Peppers are a new world crop and could not have been in Italy much before 1500. Here in America that might seem historic, but in the land of the Roman Empire that is barely out of adolesence. I guess it is okay to pick and choose which local, traditional foods one chooses to wax rhapsodically about.

Customer Review: I recently used this book for class and found it so easy to use, straight forward and accurate. The version I received also had an accompanying CD which may or may not come with this version from Amazon.
This book covers the basics from the different types of nutrients to in depth details of vitamins, minerals, weight loss, child nutrition, and exercise.
Be sure that your professor wants the 7th edition, otherwise buy the one they are requesting. My professor was working off of the 6th edition and said that the 7th was fine but it is not! They moved some things around so you are working on different page numbers and there is not alcohol section in this book like there is in the 6th edition.
Other than that, I love this book and it is one of the few that I am not reselling. Good for a student, or anyone trying to learn more about nutrition and becoming healthy, active and a proper weight.
