Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes Amazon Price: $18.45
Customer Review: Big Fat Omissions: Science, logic sorely lacking in pro-Atkins article
By Vance Lehmkuhl
Back in 2002, when The New York Times was still the most respectable American newspaper imaginable, its magazine section ran a piece by Gary Taubes with the headline "What if it's All a Big Fat Lie?" and people around the nation, journalists, scientists, and the everyday public alike, rushed to reconsider their notions of fat and nutrition. In the ensuing year, the Times has seen its credibility torpedoed by twin scandals of bogus reporting, but so far Taubes' 7,700-word pro-Atkins essay - illustrated by a cut of butter-slathered steak - has largely escaped close scrutiny. Indeed, his fat apologia has been picked up by the mainstream press as the operating story, and newstudies, even when inconclusive or negative toward Atkins, are being spun as further proof of the new paradigm.
In "Big Fat Lie," Taubes gleefully trashed decades of nutrition advice from various experts to prove that "Atkins was right all along." Robert Atkins, who died in March of a slip on the ice, was of course the most famous proponent of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets, author of the best-selling "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution." The fact that Gary Taubes, an Atkins devotee, was assigned by the Times to write a seemingly objective analysis of the good doctor's theories is just one of many questions raised by "Big Fat Lie."
A close look finds Taubes misquoting, misrepresenting, equivocating and running logical loop-the-loops to persuade us that Atkins had the answer, before finally revealing that he's on the diet himself and doesn't really care whether it shortens his life. Doubtless most readers are unaware of the CNN report in which scientists quoted by Taubes backed away from the concepts attributed to them. And few probably saw the Washington Post article citing all the peer-reviewed scientific studies that directly contradict Taubes' "low-fat diets don't work" mantra.
Even on its face, "Big Fat Lie" isn't what it appears. Taubes, the daring iconoclast, "exposes" the fact that fat can be good for you and that low-carb diets can cause weight loss, then tries to put these together to form an endorsement of the healthfulness of Atkins' program. But wait: Nutritionists never said NO fat was healthy; and it's not whether they cause temporary weight loss that concerns people about Atkins-style diets - it's whether they're harmful to your ...
200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners That Are Ready When You Are! by Dana Carpender Amazon Price: $12.21
Customer Review: The five-star reviews sound like biased raves from members of the Dana Carpender Fan Club, while other reviews helpfully warn that many of the recipes, while low-carb, use lots of butter and beef, which make them high cholesterol meaning they're most definitely NOT for me! Sounds like it's a cookbook for the Atkins crowd. (Does anyone even DO Atkins anymore?)
Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter by Robert C. Atkins Amazon Price: $4.95
Customer Review: This pocket-size book gives basic nutritional information, including total carbs and net carbs, on hundreds of foods. Most products round the number of grams of fiber to the closest whole number (or the closest higher whole number) on their labels, but Atkins lists fractional totals of grams of net carbs and fiber. There is also a modestly-sized listing of common fast foods.
In his section on vegetables, Atkins touts the value of cruciferous vegetables, garlic, etc. (p. 84). This alone should refute the silly myth of the Atkins diet being an all-meat diet. Atkins also includes a listing of "forbidden" high glycemic-impact foods. These should be enjoyed only occasionally, in very small portions, and then only by people on Lifetime Maintenance.
Portion size is important in weight control. But many conventionally-listed portions (e. g., in oz) are hard to visualize, and recommended portions are often much smaller than most people realize. For this reason, Dr. Atkins provides visual references (pp. 19-20). For example, a 3 oz serving of meat would be the size of a small pack of cigarettes.

The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution by Richard K. Bernstein Amazon Price: $16.49
Customer Review: I commend the author for faithfully following the diet he prescribes in this book- but for the vast majority of people this diet is impossible to follow. He suggests an extremely low-carbohydrate diet, even more so than the south beach diet or the atkins diet. He says to follow a 12-6-6 diet, 12 grams of carbs for breakfast, and 6 grams for both lunch and dinner. I was hopeful that this book would give me a diet to follow, but his diet was just too strict, he doesn't even allow for milk- instead he has you use a little cream mixed into water! ick! I'm sure his diet of protein and vegetables would make anyone lose weight and be very healthy, but for the average person it is just not realistic to think that you can go through the rest of your life cutting out all carbs.
