Customer Review: I really wanted to like this book, as it attempts to do many good things that most gluten-free baking books don't. The authors are health conscious, providing nutritional information for each recipe and there are lots of recipes that include high protein and high fiber ingredients. A lot of the recipes are also quite creative - you won't find the same old recipes that every book has (try the Blueberry Millet Muffins with cornmeal; the Teff Pancakes are also pretty good, especially with lemon and sugar).
On the other hand...was this book tested or proofread? Many of the recipes have at least one step or ingredient (sometimes the lack thereof) that causes odd or unpalatable results when the instructions are followed exactly. For example, the Raspberry-Amaranth Muffins have a perfect texture, but include a large amount of soy flour which makes them very sour, while the Potato and Rice Pancakes taste good but are a bit rubbery. Some recipes are just bad: the Teff Gingerbread (described as "different") is very dry and calls for way too much spice, and the Zucchini Cake is much too wet and eggy - it comes out with the consistency of a frittata.
If you are experienced with gluten-free baking ingredients and have a lot of free time, many of the recipes are 'fixable' with fairly minor changes, and you'll probably find a lot of new ideas. However, if you need reliable recipes that always come out great the first time, I can't recommend this book.

Customer Review: First, I agree with the previous reviewer who stated this cookbook is like a Hodgon product usage manual. Many recipes call for their muffin mixes, gingerbread mix, etc. I live in Oregon and have not seen Hodgson products. Also, the recipes aren't always clear. The Carrot Cake Muffins caught my eye, but it calls for an 8 oz can of pineapple and doesn't note if you should include the juice or not. As far as gluten-free (GF) - most of these recipes just substitute rice flour. Anyone who has tried GF baking knows baked goods made with straight rice flour go right into the garbage - you only make this mistake once. You need a mix of different types of flours to make GF baked goods edible. If you have access to Hodgson's products and aren't buying this for GF recipes, it might work for you. It seemed like some of the recipes came right off the back of their muffin mix boxes.

Customer Review: The good: I have made about 15 recipes from this book so far. All ranged from "good" to "excellent", a very respectable turnout. Not a single one was unpleasantly tough, dry, or otherwise failed. They compare VERY favorably with other lowfat cookies I have tried. I will definitely be making some again, and trying others. My personal favorites were apricot almond streusel squares, `gourmet' variation of the chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, crunchy peanut cookies, and cornmeal maple pecan twists.
In general, the recipes in this book are reliable, tasty and have significantly reduced fat (especially saturated fat) as compared with comparable `regular' cookies. E.g., in a typical ~ 2 cup flour recipe, there is usually ~4 T butter here as opposed to 1-2 sticks, and egg yolks are usually reduced or eliminated. The changes do reduce overall dough volume and yield a smaller batch size, which in my opinion is all to the good. (If you're buying a reduced-fat cookie cookbook, chances are you don't want 5 dozen extra cookies lying around every time you head to the kitchen to try a new recipe).
Other pluses: these recipes use familiar, inexpensive and natural ingredients that you already have on hand or can easily find: no weird or artificial diet substitutes. Unlike most low-fat recipes, these cookies are portioned normally and even generously; there is no artificial lowering of the fat content by instructing you to fashion micro-cookies of which you would have to eat 10 to equal one normal cookie. In fact, in several recipes I ended up with more cookies than the listed yield, which almost never happens to me.
This book also seems like a labor of love-- the recipes are unusually well-tested and fine tuned. The instructions are clear, careful and include useful details, like tips on how to reduce the number of dishes you dirty in the preparation. The book belies its small size with lots of helpful or interesting marginal notes and voluminous recipe variations, many of which yield genuinely different recipes (not just something obvious like substitute one variety of raisin for another). You'll find a wonderful diversity of cookie flavors, textures and styles and familar standbys as well as unique recipes of the author's own creation.
