This book (and others like it) provide a great public service which has nothing to do with its stated (to educate the public) or real (to make more money for a con artist) purpose. Namely, it's a great way to determine if you are (1) a paranoid, and/or (2) lacking in basic intelligence. If you suspect that you (or someone you know) may fit into either (or both?) categories, but aren't sure, buy a copy of this book and read it / have the suspect of your choice read it. If after doing so (actually a chapter or two would suffice) the reader can't tell that the contents are obvious garbage, then the verdict is in! Anyone who has so little knowledge of basic logic, biology, medicine, and the scientific method that they can accept this drivel as fact has just identified themselves as a danger to themselves and others. They probably shouldn't be allowed to vote, have kids, handle sharp implements, or engage in any other activity that would allow them to endanger themselves or society at large. By all means buy a copy (or two ) today, use it as directed above and help identify the truly deficient lurking in our midst. Help stamp out cluelessness today.

Customer Review: I found this information very helpful and very valuable. Even though I try to maintain awareness of good eating habits, I found this exceptionally helpful in reducing all sugar products prior to purchasing.
I have controlled my urges with carbohydrates and my love for fruit that would create a lot of insulin, and since reading this book and getting the Sugar Busters Cookbook, I am intaking more fiber, watching the amount of sugar in natural whole foods in one meal dinners or lunches, eliminating a lot of "White" potatoes, and eating fruits more appropriately throughout the day or week.
I am extremely delighted to say.. I found I am losing weight, and not craving carbs or sugar foods as readily as I did before.
I highly recommend this in general, without any cause or purpose. You will get a great deal of insight and information that YOU WILL USE on a DAILY BASIS, without having to call it a "DIET". You truly learn how to get healthy WITHOUT DRUGS !!!

Customer Review: Wow! This book really stands out with its scientific references. How often do you find complete references including even the page numbers of the scientific journal, in a popular book? I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though cosmetics are not really my thing (I'm too lazy or "busy" to bother). Now I actually find myself using face creams and sunscreens. I used to think all cosmetic products were a waste of money but now I'm convinced that some products actually do help the skin.

Some of the critical reviewers here have clearly not read the book very well. I don't know where they get the idea that Begoun is against natural ingredients or plant oils. Quite the contrary, her own products are full of these and nowhere in the book did she say that she is against them. What she is against is using natural ingredients (or any ingredients) that have not been proven effective by scientific studies. In other words, she only wants to use those natural ingredients that actually work.

The same goes for essential oils. She is not againts using them if they have proven to be effective. Some essential oils have been and you can find those in her own products. What she does not like is for essential oils to be added to products solely because of the scent. And I agree: why would you want to put ANYTHING on your skin that does not have any purpose? If you want to enjoy the scent of essential oils you can use them in candles or spray them onto your clothes. You don't have to expose your skin to something that nobody really knows very much about.

Customer Review: I purchased this book at Costco primarily because the price was attractive and I am a fan of Cook's Illustrated; but, I did not necessarily have huge expectations. How wrong I was! I turn to this book again and again for recipes that are healthy and delicious. The turkey burgers are absolutely wonderful, the chicken with pan sauces make me appear to be a much better chef than I am and the the chicken with vegetables in papillote is my new weekly favorite. While the recipes may be intimidating at first due to the lengthy directions and descriptions, they are easily mastered. I am always struggling to find week night food that is healthy, good, easily prepared and most of all, popular with the finicky husband and children and this book definitely fits the bill.

5. You can do any exercise you want, in any distribution you want, to any level you want and have it fit your lifestyle
6. No excess hunger
7. It's simple
8. It's permanent
9. Your energy level increases
10. Your body is healthier
11. You can still eat the foods you love (including ice-cream, chocolate, cake)

Ok, it may not be wonderfully written, the recipes are moderate but in the end IT WORKS! I had been trying for about 6 months to lose only 7 pounds - not only did I not lose weight, I started to GAIN - double ugg. I was already fairly fit and my eating habits were actually quite good - but I was stuck. I was exercising, cutting portions and still no lost pounds. This book fixed my problem and I actually lost more weight than I had planned. - It all boiled down to the hunger scale (well, for me anyway).
I followed the book week by week as it suggested. The first 4 weeks I didn't change much of my lifestyle at all and I didn't lose any weight (but you're not necessarily supposed to). The second 4 weeks I started to lose weight - it was the hunger scale. As long as I stop at the recommended "level 5", I lose weight. ( Actually despite my activity level. ) This prevents the rigorous and mundane calorie counting. I am still eating all of the foods I enjoy and am still losing! I'm not hungry during the day and snack 2 or more times daily (as recommended).
This also works for a completely different lifestyle than mine. I also bought this for my father who was not active, did not have great eating habits and needed to lose about 40 lbs. He too had wonderful success 35 down so far and still counting.
