Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet by Elaine Gloria Gottschall Amazon Price: $20.65
Customer Review: My son was 21 when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2004. We found Breaking the Vicious Cycle in 2006. It was a godsend for my son. After being on the diet for a year or so, he was feeling like a new man, so much so that he went off the diet. Needless to say, that didn't last long! He had a major flare-up of his colitis within weeks. He now knows that this is going to be a life-long diet for his health and sanity. He "slips" every once in a while, but he's young and that's to be expected. I highly recommend this book/diet to anyone with any kind of stomach/bowel/colon problems. If it helped my son, it can help you, too!
What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations by Stephanie Cave Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Finely written, well organized information. Great tool for empowering parents to make appropriate choices for their own children, with a wider range of information than what you typically recieve from the medical community.
The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-F... by Pamela Compart, Dana Laake Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: My son has ADHD and after a nightmare of a year on medication we vowed never to go down that road again. I started researching alternative and natural remedies to cure ADHD. I found a doctor who specialized in ADHD and autism. This doctor ordered food allergy tests for my son. Low and behold, my son is allergic to about 15 different foods including wheat, dairy, soy, milk, eggs, nuts and others.
Distraught and overwhelmed, this is the first book (of many - most of which I returned) that I ordered.
It has been a real eye-opener. I can't even go into all of the topics the book covers.
I have made three or four of the recipes so far and they've all been great. Last night I made Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread and WOW, it is really good! Some recipes I have to substitute ingredients because of the severity of my sons allergies (as I did in the Pumpkin Bread), but I did so without affecting the end result.
It's scary and intimidating to suddenly change your life style - especially in the kitchen. I was never much of a cook before and now I cook 3-4 meals a day from scratch! This book is a great resource for those who are timid about trying this new approach to cooking.
BTW - I've already noticed improvement in my son's behavior. We've been on this ADHD diet for about six weeks. It's worth it!
Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: The Grain-Free, Lactose-Free, Sug... by Raman Prasad Amazon Price: $13.59
Customer Review: A new recruit to the delights of cooking, my interest in cookbooks is currently at it's peak. What I've wanted are light, simple meals with fresh, clean tastes and this book certainly delivers. I've found several interesting recipes in this book that satisfy my hunger(and my bias towards aesthetically pleasing, well designed books: after all it's well known that one eats with ones eyes first).
I'm fortunate that I don't need to be on the SCD diet(was recommended this book by a friend, who I invited to dinner and needs to be)but honestly, with food as good as this, the SCD-ers need want for nothing!
Thank you to the authors for giving us this book.
The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates Amazon Price: $22.45
Customer Review: I bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend. I have been reading a number of books on nutrition in efforts to feel better. This book includes things that are being discussed in other books such as Ultra Metabolism. Avoid foods that can cause yeast growth, or other potentially allergic foods - wheat, dairy, sugar, yeast. While I liked the recipes in the book, and the overall concept of starchy vs. non-starchy foods and balancing them with proteins and grains. I was looking for that "master list" of foods that categorize them. This part was skimpy and placed throughout the book, making it difficult to find.
Also, the recommended diet plan was difficult to follow and incomplete. One cannot expect to completely change one's eating habits overnight a this book suggests that you do. Also, the recommendation that you need to buy their products isn't helpful. One needs a healthy eating plan that doesn't steer you away too drastically from your current eating plan.
This is a great book to continue learning about healthy eating and how what you eat affects how you feel. I'll keep the book and refer to it, but it won't be my food bible.
Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism by Jenny McCarthy Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: As a mother of a little boy who was just diagnosed, I thought Jenny is right on with everything she says that she did to help her little boy in this book! I don't know why the first reviewer found this book so offensive because I found it be the very opposite of that. I found this book as a source of inspiration and hope-especially with a diagnosis that can leave you feeling helpless and alone. There is help and out there and you can get that help to help your son/daughter. I really loved Jenny's passion when talking about her son, and I could totally relate to alot of the things that she went through while searching through the medical community to find out what exactly was wrong with her son. I also loved the "What to Do Pamplet" at the back of the book so that she can try and help some of us who have just received our diagnosis and need to know where to go. All in all, this book was helpful and inspiring that I too can pull up my sleeves and help my child with as much vigor and passion as Jenny has with her son!! I give this book two HUGE thumbs up!!!!

Special Diets for Special Kids by Lisa Lewis Amazon Price: $19.77
Customer Review: My husband ordered this book when we decided to put my son on a gluten-free diet. I was looking mainly for a gluten-free cookbook with some helpful hints included. Half the book is about the author's story and theories about why the diets in this book should be followed. For the most part I don't agree with her theories. The cookbook part is okay but so far has not really been the taste of my family. Also there are a lot of recipes for muffins and desserts which I don't really need because stores have a lot of gluten-free snacks. I am really looking for more meals I can cook my family.
Feast Without Yeast: 4 Stages to Better Health : A Complete Guide to Implemen... by Bruce Semon, Lori Kornblum Amazon Price: $22.49
Customer Review: WOW! JUST THE BOOK I NEEDED TO BEGIN. THE POUNDS ARE MELTING AWAY, AS I
SUBSTITUTE FERMENTED FOODS WITH HEALTHY ONES FOR ME. THIS BOOK IS EASY TO FOLLOW AND NOT AS STRICT AS SOME. THE STORIES AND FINDINGS ABOUT HOW AN OVER ABUNDANCE YEAST(CANDIDA)IN THE BODY CAN CAUSE SOME SERIOUS AILMENTS ARE AN EYE OPENER. I QUESTIONED EATING UNPROCESSED HONEY. OF COURSE LIKING MY SWEETS I HAVE BEEN USING HONEY AND THE POUNDS ARE STILL COMING OFF. WITH ANYTHING MODERATION AND BALANCE IS THE KEY.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I HAVE ONLY USED ONE RECIPE AS OF YET AND THE EVERYONES FAVORITE OATMEAL COOKIES WERE DELICIOUS, AND SURPRISINGLY FILLING. YEAST FREE COOKING TO ME IS BETTER THAN ANY DIET PILL, HEALTHIER AND A BETTER WAY TO GET TO A GOAL OF TOTAL HEALTH. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR YEAST INTOLERANCE, CANDIDA, CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL.
