Sulfur. Sulfur is necessary for you to make keratin, the main ingredient of hair and nails. An ingredient of every cell in the body, sulfur is necessary for healthy skin, proper bone structure, and the correct formation of cartilage and tendons. It also plays an active role in producing insulin, and thus helps keep your blood sugar levels balanced.

Zinc. Zinc is pivotal in the growth of children and crucial as well to the development of healthy sperm and male hormones. It’s also essential for a healthy immune system and for the healing of wounds. Zinc helps rid the body of harmful metals such as lead and cadmium. It’s vital for the release of insulin and for keeping the senses of taste, sight, and smell in good working order.

Signs of zinc deficiency may include acne, eczema and rough dry skin, poor concentration, repeated infections, poor growth in childhood and delayed onset of puberty, diarrhea, poor vision and smell, and loss of appetite.

Falcarinol. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that falcarinol helps protect against colon cancer. Scientists induced precancerous colon lesions (aberrant crypt foci) in three groups of laboratory animals. They then fed the first group a standard diet, the second a diet supplemented with freeze-dried carrots naturally containing falcarinol, and the third one supplemented with an extract of falcarinol. After 18 weeks, precancerous lesions in the animals in the latter two groups were much smaller than those in the control animals, and far fewer of the lesions had grown in size or progressed to become tumors.
