These days there is a big movement to save water. Most building codes now require low-flow plumbing fixtures and low irrigation landscaping is gaining momentum in many communities. They even say that nations will wage war over water in the future.

By my calculations the average American could save more water by cutting beef consumption by a third than by not showering for a year. According to the National Cattleman’s Beef Association, it takes 435 gallons of water to produce one pound of boneless beef. The USDA states that the average American consumes 64 pounds of beef per year. That’s 27,840 gallons of water to enable the average American’s annual consumption of beef. And it’s far more than we use to shower. If we assume seven five-minute showers per week, with a four-gallon-per-minute flow rate, we need 7,280 gallons per year for showers. So the amount of water in a year of daily showers equals the amount it takes to produce less than 17 pounds of boneless beef. Want to save water? Cut down on beef.

Not All Meats Are Bad

While I personally believe that a diet of mostly fruits and vegetables is best for long-term health, I don’t believe that all meat consumption is bad for you. Thus I consider myself a flexitarian as I also eat fish and poultry. Fish—specifically salmon, tuna, cod, halibut, and snapper—are excellent sources of important nutrients that magnetize the body towards health. Chicken and turkey are also great lean sources of protein and B vitamins and you can include them in a well-balanced diet several times per week. Don’t get all bent out of shape about organic or so-called “free-range poultry.” What passes for free-range is a joke. Government regulations only require that the chickens have access to an environment where they can roam free for some portion of their short lives. That doesn’t mean they actually do. As with all foods, make sure you wash the meat thoroughly before you heat it and cook it properly.
