long as they were happy, things generally went smoothly. Smiles are contagious. The more you smile, the more others around you will smile. When you smile you feel good—and those around you feel good too.

Habit #3 — Flossing

Most Westerners understand the need to brush their teeth and have the habit. We learn it early in life and hear it emphasized throughout our school years. Most of us don’t feel right without brushing at least twice a day, in the morning and before we go to bed. But how many of us actually brush our teeth after every meal and snack? And, more importantly, how many of us floss, even once a day? Or even once a month? The truth is most people never floss. And the bacteria that builds up eventually lead to gum and periodontal disease.

And worse. Recent scientific studies show a relationship between gum disease and heart ailments. How is that possible? It’s thought that the bacteria that cause gum problems move to other parts of your body. One theory is that they enter the bloodstream and latch onto fatty deposits in the blood vessels of the heart. This condition can cause blood clots, which may lead to heart attacks. The bacteria can also travel to the other major organs and infect them as well. They can heighten the chance of stroke, boost a pregnant woman's risk of premature birth, and pose a serious threat to people with diabetes and respiratory disease. So the longer you live, the happier you’ll be that you developed the flossing habit. As the old saying goes, “If I’d known I would have lived this long, I would have taken better care of my teeth.”

Habit #4 — Eating Slowly
