It was so bad that she asked me to take her to the emergency room. I drove her there and stayed with her. The on-call doctor examined her and prescribed pain medication. While he was talking with us a word came into my mind. That word was endometriosis. I had heard it once before a few years earlier when a colleague described a medical situation that his daughter was going through and so I asked the doctor if she could possibly have endometriosis. He responded that he didn’t think so and looked at me as if to say, “Where did you get your medical degree?” For some reason I had a very strong feeling that my sister should investigate this further and I told her that when she went back home to L.A. she should talk to an expert. She did, and the specialist said she had the second worst case of endometriosis that he had ever seen. After two major surgeries she is doing much better. The important thing is she now knows what is ailing her, whereas before it was a complete mystery.

Now, if you think that meditation is not for you because you might become a mindless zombie, don’t worry. That won’t happen. For most people, meditation at first consists of sitting quietly and concentrating on an item such as the breath. You try to focus and soon a thought comes, perhaps a work-related idea such as “The company’s sales are not doing so hot,” which leads to “I wonder how the new hotshot CEO feels about his promotion now that the company is tanking,” which leads to “If I get laid off, how long will we survive without my income?”

At this point you may realize, “I’m thinking, and I’m supposed to be meditating.” So you try to concentrate on the breath again. After a few moments focusing on the breath going in and the breath going out, another thought comes, maybe a family-related one like “I wonder how my sister is getting along in Chicago?” which leads to “It must be freezing in Chicago,” which then leads to the memory of a time when you were really cold.
