Let’s say that the sight of a box of donuts at the office is a temptation you just can’t resist. Here is how you would use the NLP swish technique to link the sight of the donuts to a healthy act like drinking a large glass of water.

Step One. Imagine that box of donuts through your own eyes.

Step Two. Now see yourself from “over there,” drinking a glass of water.

Step Three. View the image of the box of donuts as a large stained glass window. Take the image of you drinking a glass of water and pull it behind the image of the donuts, slingshot-style. Now let it go! Imagine it flying forward and shattering the donut image into a million bits, while you stand there drinking a cool glass of water with a big smile on your face, looking lean and happy. Do this again and again and next time you see a box of donuts, you will have the desire not to eat one, but to drink a tall glass of water instead.

Believe me, this stuff works. The swish technique is simple but very powerful. It rests on the concept of exaggerated association. The mind remembers exaggerations. It also remembers associations. So when you associate the trigger image (the box of donuts) with the desired response (drinking water) in a larger-than-life way (crashing one into the other), the mind forges a strong connection between the two. As a result, the next time you see the box of donuts instead of the old response—grabbing one and devouring it—you will reach for a tall glass of water.

Creative visualization and the swish technique are two powerful tools you can use to program your mind for success. Setting aside time each day to use them will pay dividends in your effort to transform your body and your life. As mentioned earlier, the two best times for visualization are just after waking and just before going to sleep. But you can use the next technique any time to override the mind’s natural tendencies toward doubt and anxiety.
